Scarlet von Teazel - Painter

Following my parents’ discouragement of my desire to live life as an artist, I started a ‘sensible’ yet vacuous financial career. Thankfully this was soon interrupted by having children and never to be resumed. Since then my life has completed a circle and I have finally allowed myself to do what I always wanted – art.

Arriving here has involved a slow process of evolution. For several years as a ‘Northern Artists into Schools’ community artist I carried out countless large scale art projects in schools and community centres in Yorkshire, mainly outdoor concrete sculptures and mosaic murals. Then after moving to Somerset I indulged myself by studying a fine art degree course, and now I work as a freelance painter, sculptor and installation artist.

Over the last few years I have had several revelations that affected the ways I now perceive the world. Amongst many others, one important experience was working alongside a famous German artist, Anselm Kiefer, on his installation for the London White Cube Gallery. I was also invited to visit him in his Paris studio where I interviewed him for my thesis. This encounter, together with meeting some other artists that have made the ‘lime light’, left me feeling somewhat cold, shivery and gasping for air, and my predisposition to cynicism developed into an art form.

Experiences like these have refuelled my existing uncertainty about the meaning and purpose of life – and this uncertainty strongly influences my art. When I work, I am following instincts and distant echoes, leading a dialogue with the unconscious to try to achieve a deeper understanding of our world. My art is an extension of my search for answers and through it I try to connect with other people who like me feel at times a bit lost...
